Message of African Union Commission Chairperson Jean Ping on the death of famous African singer, Myriam Makeba

 

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, November 14, 2008/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Mr. Jean Ping, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, has expressed deep regret over the death of Myriam Makeba. He said, ” Africa has lost a great lady in the world of African music, a renowned figure recognised worldwide for her contribution in the fight against apartheid and all sorts of injustice “.

 

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission said he was greatly touched by the death of Myriam Makeba, commonly known by all Africans as “Mama Africa,” adding that it is a great loss for Africa. Chairperson Ping nevertheless expressed his love and admiration for the artistic and political performances of this great Diva, saying that her resonating voice will remain legendary and it will always be admired by all Africans, while her image will forever be respected.

 

Mr. Ping further pointed out that Africans will live to remember Myriam Makeba as a symbol of an accomplished artist and for her fervent commitment for the cause of freedom during apartheid, for her fight against colonial policies, injustice, inequality and racism.
