Sudan Liberation Army/Minawi (SLA/M) visit to Umm Barru, Sector West
Senior Presidential Assistant and SLA Chairman, Mr. Minni Minawi, visited UNAMID Umm Barru Company location on 11 November 2008; he was accompanied by SLA/M commanders and Government of Sudan Military Commanders in the area. Minni Minawi informed UNAMID that his visit was in an effort to convince non-signatory factions in the area to join the peace process with the Government of Sudan. He also expressed concern over the lack of humanitarian assistance in Umm Barru.
UNAMID Police attend workshop at Kalma Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp
On 9 November 2008, UNAMID civilian, Military and Police component organized a one-day workshop on the Mandate of UNAMID and civic responsibilities in Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) Camps at the Kalma Camp; the workshop was aimed at sensitizing the IDPs on the mandate and role of UNAMID Police as well as UN Agencies working in the area.
UNAMID Police Chief of Operations, Sector South, highlighted the mandate of UNAMID Police. He stressed that one of the major tasks of UNAMID Police was to ensure security for the IDPs as well as setting up Community Policing centres and monitoring gender-based violence in IDP Camps.
Car-jacking incidents
On 11 November 2008, a vehicle belonging to the Office of Coordination and Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), accompanied by a vehicle belonging to the United Nations Joint Logistic Centre (UNJLC), traveling from Um Gunya to Nyala, Sector South, carrying a total number of five staff members in both vehicles was car-jacked in Um Gunya area, 30 km south of Nyala. Two (2) armed men dressed in military uniform stopped the vehicles and ordered the staff out of the OCHA vehicle. The staff members were unharmed and travelled back to Um Gunya in the UNJLC vehicle. The incident was reported to the Government of Sudan officials.
On the same day, a vehicle belonging to World Vision carrying 3 persons was hijacked by unknown armed persons at Um Gatety near Nyala town, in Sector South. The passengers were not harmed.
