Rwandan Contingent Begins Rotation


The Rwandan Contingent started rotating out of the mission on Monday 27 October 2008, after a one-year tour of duty in Darfur. New battalions are coming in to replace those being repatriated. The exercise is expected to end by the first week of December 2008. During their service, Rwandan troops were deployed in Sector West and Sector North.

Rwanda is currently one of the largest Troops Contributing Countries of the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) as was the case at the time of its predecessor, the African Union Mission in the Sudan (AMIS).

Nigerian Military Delegation to visit UNAMID


A Nigerian military delegation is expected to visit UNAMID and the Nigerian troops deployed in Darfur this week. The delegation will be led by Major General Osokogu, Chief Operations Officer at the Nigerian Defence Headquarters, accompanied by Colonel Onalu, Navy Captain Ogu and Group Captain Suleiman.

The delegation is on an operational and technical assessment of Nigerian troops serving in Darfur.

Deputy Police Commissioner (DPC) visit to Sector West

As part of his familiarization tour, the recently arrived Deputy Police Commissioner (DPC) for Operations, Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi, embarked on a two-day visit in Sector West Headquarters on 26 and 27 October 2008. He was met by the Military Sector Commander for a briefing on operational matters and meet the Officer-in-Charge, Head of Office. The DPC also paid a courtesy visit to the Deputy Governor of West Darfur and met with representatives of the Government of Sudan Police.

Meetings with representatives of the various movements and signatories to the Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA), including, the Sudan Liberation Movement/ Minawi (SLA/M), Justice and Equality Movement (JEM/Peace Wing) and Sudan Liberation Army/Free Will (SLA/FW) at UNAMID HQ, El-Geneina, were also part of the DPC’s program.

The Deputy Police Commissioner, Operations, also visited Al Riyad Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp whose representatives expressed their appreciation at the heightened level of security provided by UNAMID in the Camp.
