UNAMID Force Commander, General Martin Luther Agwai returns from Peacekeeping seminar in Paris
UNAMID Force Commander, General Martin Luther Agwai attended a three-day seminar at the International Forum for the Challenges of Peace Operations in Paris, France, from 20 to 22 October 2008 where he presented a paper on the challenges of peace support operations in Darfur and elaborated on the United Nations/ African Union relationship in this regard.
On the side lines of the seminar, General Agwai visited the European Union Force Headquarters (EUFOR) on 21 October 2008, where he held discussions with the EUFOR Operations Commander, Lieutenant General Pat Nash on issues relating to security and operational matters.
UNAMID Force Chief of Staff arrives in UNAMID
Brigadier General George Ndana Kyaka, from Kenya, arrived in UNAMID to assume his duties as Force Chief of Staff on 26 October 2008.
UNAMID attends monthly security meeting with Government of Sudan Security Agencies in Sector West
On 22 October 2008, UNAMID Sector West attended a monthly security meeting held at the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) Brigade Headquarters in El Geneina. It was attended by the UNAMID Sector West Commander, and other senior staff officers. The Government of Sudan side, was represented by the Sudan Armed Forces Commander in West Darfur, the Intelligence Force Commander, the Government of Sudan Police representative and other senior officials.
The monthly security meeting is aimed at strengthening relations with stakeholders and to discuss the prevailing security situation within the sector. Other issues discussed include UNAMID patrols within the town, harassment of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) by the GOS, Nertiti North IDP incident, and the surrender of JEM combatants. The Government of Sudan officials also requested an Arabic version of the Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) signed between the Government of Sudan and UNAMID.
Preparations are on-going for UNAMID Force Medal parade
UNAMID Force is currently rehearsing for the medal parade to be held on 29 October 2008 in El Fasher, North Darfur. Medals will be presented to officers from the Gambian contingent, staff officers from Forward Headquarters and military observers.
