High Commissioner for Human Rights
to visit
NAIROBI, Kenya, October 17, 2008/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights Kyung-wha Kang will visit Kenya from 21 to 24 October. Ms. Kang’s visit will have three main components: on 22 October she will be opening a major conference of national human rights institutions from all over the world in Nairobi – more details on that conference are available in a separate media advisory. During her mission, she will discuss the human rights situation in Kenya with representatives of the Government, including Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Kenyan civil society organizations, and the United Nations country team in Kenya. Ms. Kang will also visit Dadaab refugee camp in northern Kenya and meet with Somali refugees. She will discuss the dire human rights and humanitarian situation in Somalia with the Special Representative of the Secretary General on Somalia, Somali officials, UN staff working on Somalia, and representatives of Somali civil society.
The Deputy High Commissioner will conclude her visit with a press conference on 24 October at 13:15 at the UN centre in Nairobi.
