UNAMID Joint Special Representative, Rodolphe Adada, attends the opening session of the Initiative of the People of Sudan in Khartoum
The Initiative of the People of Sudan for Solving the Darfur issue kicked off its first session today at the Friendship Hall in Khartoum.
The meeting was attended by various international and regional personalities, including the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Mr. Amru Musa; the African Union (AU) Chairperson, Mr. Jean Ping; the Joint Chief Mediator, Mr. Djibril Bassole; and UNAMID Joint Special Representative (JSR), Mr. Rodolphe Adada.
Mr. Adada had a meeting with the AU Chairperson, Mr. Jean Ping during which he briefed him on the status of UNAMID deployment, as well as on the positive outcome of the visit of the Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operation, Alain Le Roy and on the visit of Under-Secretary-General for Field Missions, Ms. Susana Malcorra. For his part, Mr. Ping stressed the importance of the existing cooperation between the AU and the UN to achieve peace in Darfur through their Hybrid Operation and through the peace process led by the Joint Chief Mediator, Mr. Djibril Bassole.
The JSR also briefed the US Chargé d’Affaires, Mr. Alberto Fernandez, on the status of UNAMID deployment.
UNAMID Deputy Force Commander visit Nertiti and Mukjar
Following recent security incident at the Nertiti Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp (IDP) on 10 October 2008, UNAMID Deputy Force Commander Major General Emmanuel Karake Karenzi, travelled to Nertiti on Thursday 16 October 2008, to evaluate the situation in the area and get first hand information on the incident. He was accompanied by the Deputy Police Commissioner for Operations.
As part of his routine duties, the Deputy Force Commander also paid a visit to the UNAMID military base in Mukjar, Sector West, and to acquire more information on the incident that occurred recently at the UNHCR offices.
UNAMID Police Commissioner attends UNDP retreat on Early Recovery Challenges & Strategies for Darfur
UNAMID Police Commissioner, Michael Fryer, travelled to Khartoum, to attend the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) retreat on Early Recovery Challenges and Strategies for Darfur. The objective of the retreat is to consolidate UNDP’s presence and programmes in Darfur, considering the complex environment in the three Darfur states. The retreat also intends to discuss field operational support, programmes, activities and tools and hold strategic discussions between UNDP and UNAMID.
