Central African Republic / Chad / Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG), Victor Angelo, Visits Am Timan
NDJAMENA, Chad, July 2, 2008/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) in Central African Republic and Chad, Victor Angelo, visited the town of Am Timan, some 500 km southeast of N’Djamena, on 1 July 2008. Upon arrival, the SRSG was met by the local dignitaries, including the Governor of the Region, military authorities, and a group of traditional leaders.
The SRSG explained that the objective of his visit was to pay his respects to the local authorities, and to assess the security situation in anticipation of the imminent deployment of MINURCAT in the area.
The SRSG told the authorities that the role of MINURCAT will be essentially to reinforce security, the administration and the justice system, and by doing so, to help create the conditions for a voluntary and secure return of refugees and IDPs to their homes. MINURCAT will, in the long run, help create the conditions conducive for a social and economic development in the region.
The challenges paused by insecurity in the region include attacks by armed rebel groups, highway banditry, and illegal poaching in the natural park of Zakouma, where rangers guarding the area are also targeted.
The local authorities welcomed the deployment plans of MINURCAT.
Following the meeting with the dignitaries, the delegation visited the premises of the local gendarmerie and police, which were seriously destroyed by the rebellion in early February 2008.
