African Union Summit / Commissioner Joiner, Ambassador Maundi, Honorable Niyungeko, Brief the Press on Some of the Summit Items
SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt, June 27, 2008/African Press Organization (APO)/ — On the second day of the Press Briefings organized by the Division of Communication and Information of the African Union ahead of the Eleventh Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly, scheduled for 30 June to 1st July 2008 in Sharm El Sheikh, Arab Republic of Egypt, the national and international journalists where briefed on four major issues on the agenda of the Summit.
The first press briefing was presented by the Commissioner of Political Affairs of the African Union Commission, Mrs. Julia Dolly Joiner. She briefed the journalists on the situation of refugees, returnees and internally displaced persons in Africa. Commissioner Joiner also addressed the issue of Afro-Arab cooperation.
The second press briefing was given by the Chairperson of the Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC), H.E. Mohammed Maundi, who presented an overview of the proceedings during the Sixteenth Ordinary Session of the PRC.
The third press briefing by the president of the African Court on Human and People’s Rights, Hon. Justice Gerard Niyungeko, focused on the activities of the Court and its functioning. The president presented the evolution of the Court from its creation at the Summit of Khartoum in 2006 to its present state.
Worth recalling that, the headquarters of the Court on Human and People’s Rights, is in Arusha, the United Republic of Tanzania.
Hon. Justice Niyungeko was accompanied at the Press briefing by the Director of the African Union Legal Counsel, Mr. Ben Kioko, who presented the legal items on the agenda of the Summit notably, the Status of OAU/AU Treaties amongst others.
