Uganda / Denmark / MDG3 campaign in Uganda: promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment.

KAMPALA, Uganda, June 24, 2008/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Royal Danish Embassy in Kampala is conducting a Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 3 Campaign in Uganda from the 16th of May to the 15th of June 2008.

The campaign’s objectives are to spread awareness about and increase commitments in Uganda towards MDG3: promotion gender equality and women’s empowerment.

MDG3 is a Call to Action campaign. It calls for empowering women and gender equality. Why? Because Uganda cannot get out of poverty without the help of women.

Documentary on the MDG3 Torch Bearers and how they are adressing MDG3 on: UBC TV Sunday 8th June @ 7:30 pm – WBS TV Tuesday 10th June @ 7:30 pm – NTV 15th/16th June @ 6:30 pm and 8:30 pm, respectively 

 On the 10th of June, the Danish Embassy held a breakfast meeting for Members of Parliament. Here, Torch Bearers the Nnabagereka and Atuki Turner appealed to the MPs to do something extra for women, who in turn made their own MDG3 commitments. Read more about the MP breakfast meeting.

As of the 3rd of June, Torch Bearer Atuki Turner is in the middle of shooting a documentary on domestic violence. She has also given several public talks on bride price and the MDG3 Campaign in Tororo. Read more.

As of the 30th of May, the MDG3 radio campaign has broadcast 4 spots in 8 languages, as well as 16 radio programmes on gender and agriculture, gender and governance, and gender and violence.


MDG3 Campaign activities

MDG3 Campaign activities in Uganda in the period 16 May – 15 June comprise:

Radio activities: radio spots, radio programmes and talkshows on Uganda’s MDG3 challenges and Calls to Action (radio activities in 8 different languages on 16 radio stations covering over 75 districts in Central, North, East and West Uganda)

TV documentaries on the MDG3 Campaign’s Torch Bearers and what they already do to promote MDG3

Parliamentarian workshops on MDG3 Challenges

Press meetings on the MDG3 Campaign 

 Newspaper and magazine articles on Torch Bearers, Uganda’s MDG3 challenges and Calls to Action 

Dissemination of materials with MDG3 facts and Calls to Action (recommendations) in 5 different languages

Other activities as defined by Torch Bearers.

In addition, the Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Hon. Dr. Suruma, as well as Ms. Judi Ann Nassali Kamanyi from MS Uganda and Ms. Hellen Asamo, Chairperson of the National Union of Disabled Persons of Uganda participated in the Copenhagen MDG3 Conference on the 16-17th of April, 2008. The objectives of the conference were to identify practical approaches to the economic empowerment of women.

MDG3 Campaign Torch Bearers

A central element in the MDG3 Campaign is the MDG3 Champion Torch Bearers. The Embassy has obtained commitments as MDG3 Torch Bearers from three women that have previously shown great dedication to promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment in Uganda, and who thus commit to Do Something Extra to achieve MDG3. The MDG3 Torch Bearers are:

The Nnabagereka of Buganda, Her Royal Highness Sylvia Nagginda – Founder of the Nnabagereka Development Foundation

Atuki Turner – Executive Director of the MIFUMI Project in Eastern Uganda 

Josephine Okot – Founder and Managing Director of Victoria Seeds, Ltd.


Launch of MDG3 Campaign in Uganda

To mark the launch of the MDG3 Campaign in Uganda on the 16th of May 2008, a press conference was held with journalists from radio, TV and print media, as well as a massive radio campaign that saw 16 local FM stations in Uganda air 192 spots on that day alone.

The Campaign was officially launched at a colourful ceremony at the Serena Hotel in Kampala. In attendance were about 250 guests drawn from the Torch Bearer constituencies, the government of Uganda, development partners, NGO representatives, Buganda Kingdom ministers, the media, as well as representatives from various missions in Uganda.
