STATEMENT ATTRIBUTABLE TO THE SPOKESPERSON OF THE
SECRETARY-GENERAL
The Secretary-General has been informed of the arrival in
Bujumbura of a delegation of the Palipehutu-FNL, accompanied by
members of the Facilitation and Political Directorate of the Burundi
peace process. The Secretary-General welcomes this positive
development. He strongly urges the Palipehutu-FNL to engage in good
faith in the Joint Verification and Monitoring Mechanisms and
Political Directorate.
The Secretary-General remains deeply concerned by the ongoing
fighting and the suffering it has inflicted on the population. He
calls on the Government and the Palipehutu-FNL to immediately cease
military action and to take measures to build confidence in, and
support, the peace process.
The Secretary-General expresses his appreciation to the leaders
of the Regional Peace Initiative for Burundi and to the South African
Facilitation for their tireless efforts.

Déclaration attribuable à la porte-parole du Secrétaire général des
Nations Unies sur le Burundi
Le Secrétaire général a été informé de l’arrivée à Bujumbura
d’une délégation du Palipehutu-FNL, accompagnée des membres de la
Facilitation ainsi que du Directoire politique du processus de paix
au Burundi. Le Secrétaire général accueille favorablement ce
développement positif. Il exhorte le Palipehutu-FNL à s’engager en
toute bonne foi dans le Mécanisme conjoint de vérification et de
surveillance et le Directoire politique.
Le Secrétaire général reste profondément préoccupé par les
combats continus ainsi que la souffrance infligée à la population.
Il appelle le Gouvernement et le Palipehutu-FNL à cesser
immédiatement toute action militaire et à prendre des mesures afin
d’établir la confiance et appuyer le processus de paix.
Le Secrétaire général exprime son appréciation aux
dirigeants de l’Initiative régionale de la paix au Burundi ainsi qu’à
la Facilitation sud-africaine pour leurs efforts inlassables.
