IFJ Calls for Investigation into Attacks on Public Broadcaster’s Employees in Burundi
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) today called on the government of Burundi to conduct a thorough investigation into two separate attacks on Monday that killed Cécile Ndikumana, a saleswoman for public broadcaster Radio-Télévision Nationale du Burundi (RTNB), and wounded RTNB cameraman Hilaire Minani.
“We are appalled by this sad news for our colleagues at RTNB who already face a difficult time. We stand in solidarity with Cécile and Hilaire’s families and colleagues,” said Gabriel Baglo, the Director of the IFJ Africa Office. “We call on the government to conduct a thorough investigation into the two attacks and bring those responsible to justice.”
Cécile Ndikumana, an agent with RTNB’s commercial service was killed in the capital city Bujumbura while on her way home with her husband on Monday night. According to sources, they were shot by gunmen near their home. Cécile Ndikumana died instantly and her husband received non-life-threatening injuries.
At about the same time, cameraman Hilaire Minani was with his neighbour in Bujumbura when the two were attacked by unidentified men. Minani was wounded in the head and his friend was killed.
There has been a wave of violence in the Burundian capital city in recent weeks since clashes resumed between the army and rebels.
The IFJ also called on the government to improve the working conditions of the RTNB journalists and media workers by abiding by the collective bargaining agreement signed by the communication minister and the Free Union of RTNB Workers (SYLT) in December. SYLT members have been on strike since April 28th in protest over the failure to implement the agreement, which improved social and other conditions for the public broadcaster’s employees.

La FIJ demande une enquête sur les attaques d’employés du radiodiffuseur public au Burundi
La Fédération Internationale des Journalistes (FIJ) a appelé aujourd’hui le gouvernement du Burundi à conduire une enquête approfondie sur deux attaques distinctes lundi qui ont tué Cécile Ndikumana, une commerciale de la Radio-Télévision Nationale du Burundi (RTNB), et blessé le caméraman de la RTNB Hilaire Minani.
« Nous sommes consternés par cette triste nouvelle pour nos collègues de la RTNB qui traversent déjà une période difficile. Nous sommes solidaires des familles et des collègues de Cécile et Hilaire», a dit Gabriel Baglo, le Directeur du Bureau Afrique de la FIJ. « Nous demandons au gouvernement de conduire une enquête approfondie sur les deux attaques et de traduire les responsables en justice. »
Cécile Ndikumana, un agent du service commercial de la RTNB a été tuée dans la capitale Bujumbura, alors qu’elle rentrait chez elle avec son mari dans la nuit du lundi. Selon des sources, ils ont été attaqués par des hommes armés à proximité de leur domicile. Cécile Ndikumana est morte instantanément et son mari s’en est sorti avec des blessures légères.
A peu près au même moment, le cameraman Hilaire Minani était avec son voisin à Bujumbura lorsqu’ils ont été attaqués par des hommes non identifiés. Minani a été blessé à la tête et son ami a été tué.
Il y a une vague de violences dans la capitale burundaise au cours des dernières semaines depuis la reprise des affrontements entre l’armée et les rebelles.
La FIJ a également appelé le gouvernement à améliorer les conditions de travail des journalistes et professionnels des média de la RTNB en respectant la convention collective signée par le ministre de la communication et Syndicat Libre des Travailleurs de la RTNB (SYLT) en Décembre. Les membres du SYLT sont en grève depuis le 28 avril pour protester contre la non-application de l’accord, qui doit améliorer les conditions sociales et autres des employés du radiodiffuseur public.
