Statement on the JEM attack in Sudan.
Foreign Secretary, David Miliband, made a statement on the Justice and Equality Movement’s (JEM) attack on Omdurman in Sudan.
‘The Justice and Equality Movement’s attack on Omdurman is a shocking further escalation of violence in Sudan, that extends the conflict beyond Darfur. The UK calls for an immediate end to the fighting. All the parties to the conflict must now do everything they can to find a peaceful solution. Further violence does nothing to ease the plight of the people of Darfur who want to return to their homes and rebuild their lives.
‘The UK is using all its diplomatic contacts to urge restraint, with the rebel movements, the Government of Sudan, and neighbouring countries. We stand ready to support efforts by the UN and African Union to re-energise the peace process for Darfur.’
