Media advisory: ICC Prosecutor visits Egypt and Saudi Arabia

On May 10 – 14, International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor, Luis Moreno-Ocampo, will be on an official visit to Cairo, Egypt and Saudi Arabia to update officials on the activities of the Office in the four situations currently before the Court:  The Democratic Republic of Congo, Northern Uganda, the Darfur region of Sudan, and the Central African Republic — as well as progress on situations under analysis.  Prosecutor Moreno-Ocampo has also just returned from a visit to Indonesia where he met with Dr. N. Hassan Wirajuda, Indonesian Foreign Minister as part of his continued constructive dialogue with States.

 
 

“I am a Prosecutor.  My mandate is justice; justice for the victims.  The international community has to remain consistent in its commitment to end impunity.  It must be our shared goal to see that justice is served for the most serious crimes.  We must draw a line – crimes are not acceptable; this is the message I have heard in all my travels to the region.” The Prosecutor added.

 
 

During this visit, Prosecutor Moreno-Ocampo will reaffirm his commitment to deepen bilateral co-operation with States.  “Continued co-operation with all partners is of paramount importance in ensuring that the Court’s decisions are implemented and that justice is done for the victims.”  The Prosecutor said.  “As long as indicted individuals remain at large, victims are threatened and crimes continue.”

 
 

The International Criminal Court is an independent, permanent court that investigates and prosecutes persons accused of the most serious crimes of international concern, namely genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes if national authorities with jurisdiction are unwilling or unable to do so genuinely.
