IFJ Calls for Investigation into Killing of Ugandan Journalist
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) today called on the Ugandan government to investigate the brutal killing of Ugandan journalist Rebecca Wilbrod Kasujja.
“We condemn this shocking attack on Rebecca, which underscores the danger that journalists face in Africa,” said Gabriel Baglo, Director of the IFJ Africa Office. “We are calling on authorities to conduct a full investigation and bring her attackers to justice.”
Kasujja, 32, was raped and killed by unknown men on Sunday morning as she was on her way to work at Buwama FM Radio station, a community radio station at about 62 km south of Kampala.
“This incident once again highlights the dangers facing journalists who work odd hours,” said Ugandan Journalists’ Union President, Michael Wakabi. “Female journalists, who form the bulk of newscasters, are particularly vulnerable as has been demonstrated by the latest incident.”
According to reports, residents of the village discovered her body in a nearby bush and reported the incident to Buwama police station. The reason behind her killing remains unknown, but fellow journalists believe it has relations with her journalistic work.

La FIJ appelle à une enquête sur le meurtre d’une journaliste ougandaise
La Fédération Internationale des Journalistes (FIJ) a appelé aujourd’hui le gouvernement ougandais à enquêter sur le meurtre de la journaliste Rebecca Wilbrod Kasujja.
« Nous condamnons cette attaque choquante sur Rebecca, qui souligne le danger auquel les journalistes sont confrontés en Afrique, » a dit Gabriel Baglo, Directeur du Bureau Afrique de la FIJ. « Nous demandons aux autorités de diligenter une enquête et traduire ses agresseurs en justice. »
Kasujja, 32 ans, a été violée et tuée par des inconnus dimanche matin, alors qu’elle était en chemin pour le travail à Buwama FM, une station de radio communautaire, à environ 62 km au sud de Kampala.
« Cet incident révèle une fois encore les dangers auxquels sont confrontés les journalistes qui travaillent à des heures particulières », a dit Michael Wakabi, le Président du Syndicat des Journalistes Ougandais. « Les femmes journalistes, qui constituent l’essentiel des présentateurs des informations, sont particulièrement vulnérables, comme cela a été démontré par ce dernier incident. »
Selon des informations, les habitants du village ont découvert son corps dans un buisson à proximité et ont signalé l’incident au poste de police de Buwama. La raison de son meurtre reste inconnue, mais certains de ses confrères journalistes estiment qu’il est lié à son travail journalistique.
